Can I get laid off / fired for getting a visible tattoo?

In Short: Yes

Not so short: Although your employers cannot state “visible tattoos” as the reason you were fired or not hired, but they could say that you do not fit in with the image of the company, or your behavior is damaging to their image.

“Will your tattoo be accepted in your workplace?”  Is one very important thing to think about before getting inked. This is why planning on where your tattoo is going to go is key! Many corporate sector companies see tattoos as unprofessional, liberal and too contemporary

Yes we know, and agree that tattoos are freedom of speech and with the new laws in the USA and in other countries it is legally free too. But like we said, there are ways to get round dismissing you by not stating that as the reason.

So if you really want to get a tattoo in a visible place i.e. Fore-arm, hand or neck, then we would suggest consulting your employer beforehand. Often they will be happy to let you get it so long you’ll cover it up whilst at work. There are many military men and woman, doctors and lawyers who have such ink, and wear long sleeves during the day. As for covering up your neck tattoo, unless you work in the arctic and wear scarves all day, that spot may be a tad bit more challenging to get away with.
